Llansilin Tower

The nineteenth century saw major changes to the structure of Llansilin Church.

In 1813 the wooden spire of the church was burnt down and a stone tower was built to replace it in 1832 at a cost of £522.

To celebrate the millennium, the bells in St. Silin’s Church Tower were recast, an additional was acquired and an extra bell was commissioned as well as the frame strengthened.The bells rang in the new millennium!

We have and active Band of Ringers, including enthusiastic Juniors, who practice every week on Tuesday evening.

The Bells of Llansilin

We have 6 bells.

4 bells cast by C & G Mears of Whitechapel Foundry were installed 1848 costing £114.

These were hung on an oak frame.

Treble -= 3 Cwt -1-14 No.2 -= 4 Cwt – 1-11 No.3. = 4Cwt – 2-12 Tenor = 6 Cwt -1-14

In 1950 Bell Hughes who lived in Brynaber operated 4 lines with his hands and feet to ring the bell clappers single handed. The bells fell silent and became unsafe until a major restoration project at the time of the millennium.

In 1999 an additional 2 bells were included making up the current 6 bells.

This was made possible by Millennium funding.

Number 2 bell was third hand from Brimpsfield Gloucestershire and a new Treble bell was commissioned from Whitechapel Foundry. All the bells are now hung on a metal frame.

Treble = 2 Cwt-3-2 No.2 = 3 Cwt-0-25. No.3 = 3 Cwt-0-3. No.4 = 4Cwt-0-11

No5. = 4Cwt-0-22. Tenor = 5Cwt-3-0

Since 2000 a band of local ringers have rung for monthly Sunday services, weddings and special occasions. We also have a junior band and practice night is on Tuesdays between 6.30 and 8.00pm. Visiting Bell Ringers are always welcome.
